Jaz Marine Team

UWE JASPERSEN / JAZ MARINE  2001 - 2007
Founder and Managing Director of Jaz Marine – a company specialised in the construction of high performance composite boats. Notable examples are two Morrelli/Melvin designed 62ft catamarans. These boats are constructed with pre-wetted Carbon fibre and Kevlar and are post cured in an oven at 60 degrees Celsius. Also, UJ designed the 37ft coastal cruising catamaran, known as the “Jaz 37 Island Hopper” which is built by Jaz Marine and received rave reviews in the European multihull sailing press.  In 2007 we decided to give the Island Hopper a new look and did some minor exterior modifications before setting up female production line tooling. In 2005 we started the first boat of a very successful series of Owen/Clarke designed Class 40’s, known as the Jaz 40.Under Ian Munslow, Bolands Mill finished 3rd in the 2006 Route du Rhum and Miranda Merron and Peter Harding achieved a second place in the 2007 Class 40 Worlds in the very first regatta with a brand-new Jaz 40 “ 40 Degrees”.

2002
Employed by “Hexagon”, entry in the “Around Alone Race”, to build a new rudder in two days after Graham Dalton hit a whale a few days before the CT re-start. The rudder was finished on time and has crossed the Atlantic twice since.

1997 – 2001
UJ was Production Manager at Voyage Yachts. He joined Voyage when the company built two 40ft cruising catamarans per year, with 25 people. Built up the skills level and developed the production line with a staff compliment of 186 people to a point where Voyage were launching a new boat every 3 weeks.

2001
UJ was employed by Volvo entry “SEB” as shore crew boat builder in Cape Town. Gunnar Krantz, who put together the “Swedish Match” campaign in the previous Whitbread race, was skipper of this boat.

2000
UJ was employed by maxi yacht “Nicorette/Tokolosh” on a short term basis to assist with the hull lamination in pre wetted unidirectional Carbon.

2000
UJ was part of a team of boat builders to facilitate repairs to Cam Lewis’ severely damaged catamaran “Team Adventure” which took part in the “The Race 2000”.

1997
UJ was employed by Whitbread entry “Swedish Match” as shore crew boat builder in Cape Town.

1995 – 1996
Bruce Farr and Farr International awarded UJ with the build licence of the famous Mumm 36 as one out of only five builders world wide. This was done in a joint venture with Robertson & Caine and two boats were produced before the class disintegrated. “Balihoo Too”, a locally owned Mumm 36, was regarded as one of the top boats worldwide and was the first boat from any Mumm 36 builder to measure 100% while being the first boat off the production line.

1990 – 1996
UJ started a new shipyard, Southern Wind, out of the ruins of the bankrupt Cenmarine. Built up staff skills and staff compliment to a level that became internationally recognised as of builder of top quality boats. He resigned after 6 years, as Managing Director, in an attempt to get back into race boat building.

1989 – 1990
UJ started his own small boatbuilding business and built the locally well-known 50 ft IMS racer “Club Mykonos”, one of the first boats to be built in Kevlar and Carbon in South Africa. He also worked as a subcontractor to Cenmarine, responsible for the hull and deck construction of the Farr 72, later adopted by Southern Wind shipyard. This business was absorbed into Southern Wind when UJ started that yard.

1989
UJ was working for John Martin and his “Allied Bank” campaign while doing his National Service in the SA Navy. He was responsible for the extensive reconstruction of  “Voortrekker 2” as part of this campaign.

1988 – 1989
UJ was employed by Cenmarine to set up the production of their Ron Holland designed Magnum 465. The first boat was built over male tooling and the moulds were taken from the first boat.

1985 – 1987
UJ worked for JJ Provoyeur / Action Yachting. Was responsible for the construction of his personal 36 ft cold-moulded boat “Lusty” while also building racing dinghies, like the Fireball and Sonnet.

1986
UJ was responsible for the repair of the BOC Challenger “Thursday’s Child” during the BOC Cape Town stopover. During the same stopover he was also employed by BOC challenger “UAP” to effect major repairs to her deck that started caving in under the deck stepped mast.

1985
UJ was employed by Whitbread entry “Drum” to do major repairs to the boat during the 1985 Whitbread stopover in Cape Town. Work included rebuilding entire bow section from the inside to remove delaminated core and to reinforce the keel support structure.
